How to Prevent Sensitivity After Teeth Whitening

White Teeth ComparisonTeeth whitening is a fantastic way to rejuvenate your smile and improve the appearance of your teeth with minimal time and effort.  However teeth whitening can leave patients with tooth sensitivity following the treatment.  Tooth sensitivity is generally mild and short lived but may become more intense lasting up to 24 hours. Fortunately, there are ways to reduce the discomfort. There are many possible reasons people may experience increased tooth sensitivity following a whitening treatment.  Teeth whitening systems can temporarily strip the teeth of their protective mineral layer and increase the porosity of teeth.  This can temporarily expose the tooth’s nerves, which increase sensitivity. To prevent tooth sensitivity after a whitening treatment, try a few of these…

  1. Use a soft bristled toothbrush. A hard bristled toothbrush can be abrasive and exacerbate tooth sensitivity.
  2. Avoid hot or cold foods and drinks. Sticking to lukewarm or room temperature drinks and food, can help prevent tooth sensitivity following teeth whitening.
  3. Do not brush after teeth whitening. Allow your teeth time to recover after a whitening treatments. Brushing immediately after can potentially damage enamel and open the pores in your teeth further.

Ask Dr. Skoulas to select the teeth whitening technique best suited for your needs. At Antigone Skoulas, DDS and Associates, we offer a variety of techniques to achieve your brighter smile and offer recommendations to help your particular situation.
