Can Bad Breath Be Prevented?

Who wants bad breath? Certainly, no San Francisco worker or resident! Sometimes, dentists have to gently tell patients that they need to practice better oral hygiene to prevent bad breath, or they come to them because they’ve noticed the problem on their own. Here are some tips on how you can prevent bad breath from ever happening.

Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day

We’ve all heard from our dentists that we need to brush our teeth twice daily. And we certainly know what morning breath smells like! But, be honest. How many of you skip out on brushing at night because you’re too tired and just want to sleep?

Dental patients should always brush their teeth twice daily. That’s not only to get rid of that stinky morning breath you wake up with, but also to brush away food debris and bacteria that has accumulated on your teeth during the day. By brushing twice daily, you make sure that no bacteria festers in your mouth, causing it to smell bad.

Floss Your Teeth Once a Day

Your dentist tells you that flossing is important for several reasons. One of them is to prevent bad breath. That’s because even if you brush twice a day, small pieces of food debris and bacteria can get trapped in between your teeth. And, they can cause a smelly situation for dental patients!

Use Antibacterial Mouthwash Once a Day

Unfortunately, flossing and brushing just isn’t enough to keep your mouth smelling fresh and clean. Our dentists also recommend their San Francisco dental patients use antibacterial mouthwash at least once a day. This is not only to give you that mouthwash-fresh smell but to kill stinky bacteria that flossing and brushing alone can’t reach.

Visit Your Dentist Bi-Annually for Regular Dental Checkups

Perhaps the best way to make sure you prevent bad breath is to see your dentist every 6 months. This is so your dentist can perform a full oral health examination, and make sure you don’t have any tooth decay or stages of gum disease – both of which can cause your breath to stink.

If you do have one of these symptoms, our dentists will put a treatment plan into place to not only address the problem but rid your mouth of that smelly breath, too! Visiting your dentist every 6 months is a win-win situation!

Your San Francisco Dentist Wants You to Have Fresh Breath, and a Healthy Mouth, Too

Our dentists do not want their San Francisco patients walking around San Francisco with stinky breath. They also do not want them to have oral hygiene issues that could be caught early to prevent bigger issues or prevented altogether.

This is why our doctors spend so much time with their patients, talking to them not only about the importance of practicing proper oral hygiene but maintaining bi-annual dentist appointments to catch any tooth decay or gum disease before it becomes a smelly problem.
