Preventative dentistry refers to procedures that help patients avoid future oral health problems. These procedures help patients keep their oral environment stable so that future treatment will not be necessary.
Address Problems Promptly. With regular examinations, dentists can catch oral health issues like cavities at earlier stages, making treatment less costly and more effective.
Promotes Positive Oral Care Habits. Dr. Skoulas will review the importance of properly caring for your teeth at home and help instill good oral hygiene habits including brushing, flossing, and addressing any problem areas. The at-home element of care is paramount in order to maintain a beautiful and healthy smile, so Dr. Skoulas wants to make sure each patient is paying close attention to oral health.

Reduce Chances of Developing Dental Problems. Regular dental care is considered check-ups and cleanings at least every 6 months, with some patients needing to visit the dentist more frequently for periodontal care. These visits help patients avoid or treat tooth decay and periodontal disease, improving the overall health of their smiles.

Dental Cleaning

Dental Cleaning

A dental cleaning, also known as an oral prophylaxis, is the removal of dental plaque and tartar (calculus) from the teeth. Specialized instruments are used to gently remove these deposits without harming the teeth. First, an ultrasonic device that emits vibrations and is cooled by water is used to loosen larger pieces of tartar. Next, hand tools are used to manually remove smaller deposits and smooth the tooth surfaces. Once all the tooth surfaces have been cleaned of tartar and plaque, the teeth are polished.

Oral Cancer Screening

Oral Cancer Screenings are performed at every examination. This is completed in order to spot early signs of cancer in the oral environment. Early diagnosis makes the disease more treatable.

Dental Lasers

Dental Laser
Skoulas DDS uses dental lasers to perform biopsies and remove lesions. Cosmetic gum procedures are faster and have better recovery times when employing lasers. Gum lifts can be performed with dental lasers for gummy smiles. Lasers can also clean and sterilize periodontal pockets leading to better and improved overall gum health.

Frequently Asked Questions About Preventative Dentistry

How can I prevent tooth decay?
One of the most important steps you can take is to brush your teeth at least twice daily. Flossing is mandatory for avoiding decay between teeth. Attend all scheduled dental exams and cleanings to prevent the progression of tooth decay.
How do I prevent myself from getting oral cancer?
Heavy smoking and alcohol use are two preventable causes of oral cancer. However, cancer can develop with no specific risk factors. Oral cancer often goes undetected until later stages, when patients are not seen in the office, regularly. Visit your dentist twice annually for cleanings and exams to ensure that any lesions receive early treatment.
Are dental lasers safe?
A laser is a beam of light that safely performs many dental procedures. When dentists use lasers, healing time is faster and the procedures are completed with more precision.
Why is Botox recommended to treat TMJ?
TMJ disorders often result from muscular inflammation in the facial muscles. This problem can happen due to bruxism (teeth grinding) with malpositioned teeth. Botox stops the muscles from contracting, relieving pain. While it does not fix TMD, it is a muscle therapy to help with symptoms.
All patients deserve preventative care. Regular exams can help spot problems before they become major issues.
