What Is a Denture?

Dentures are a set of artificial teeth used when you have lost real teeth. They allow you to have the look and function of natural teeth without natural teeth.

A denture improves chewing ability and speech and provides support for facial muscles. It can also help you look and feel more confident.

There are several types of dentures available to patients with missing teeth. The one that’s best for you depends on how many teeth you have missing, where the gaps are located, and the condition of your remaining teeth.

What Are the Different Types of Dentures?

Dr. Skoulas is an expert in restoring smiles with several types of dentures, each of which she designs to be aesthetically pleasing and functional.

Complete Dentures

Complete dentures replace all your teeth in one jaw. Implant-supported complete dentures are prosthetic devices that replace all the teeth in one jaw and are stabilized by the implants.

Implant-Supported Partial Dentures

Implant-supported partial dentures can sometimes be removed, but are most often non-removable.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures replace several teeth and are stabilized by the remaining teeth with metal clasps and supports. “Precision” partial dentures differ in that the components are hidden.

Candidates for complete dentures have lost most or all of their teeth, whereas a partial denture is a viable option for those who still have some natural teeth.

How Do You Care For Dentures?

A denture is not quite as durable as your natural teeth, so you have to care for them gently. Dr. Skoulas will give you specific instructions that often include using a denture brush instead of your normal toothbrush and paste. Some toothpaste can be harsh and may scratch the denture. It’s also a good idea to soak the denture when it’s not in use.

Dentures can positively change your life by restoring your ability to chew, filling out your smile, and making you feel more confident. If you’re ready to restore your smile with dentures, call the office or request an appointment online today.
